Variations and Substitutions
You can change up the flavors a lot in this daiquiri simply by making the following substitutions for simple syrup:
- Orange-flavored liqueur, such as Grand Marnier, triple sec, Cointreau, or curaçao
- Coffee-flavored liqueur, such as Kahlúa (and use dark rum to bring out the molasses flavors)
- Maraschino cherry liqueur
- Chambord or another raspberry-flavored liqueur
- Frangelico hazelnut flavored liqueur
- Amaretto
- Crème de cacao
- Midori or another melon liqueur
- Use tequila in place of rum for a banana margarita
Garnishes
The banana daiquiri lends itself well to a traditional daiquiri garnish of a citrus slice, wedge, wheel, or peel. You can also grate some fresh nutmeg on the top for an aromatic garnish.
About the Banana Daiquiri
A banana daiquiri recipe follows the basic formula for daiquiris but adds either fresh bananas or banana liqueur. Daiquiris are essentially rum sours; that is, they follow a basic sour recipe with equal parts sweet and sour (in daiquiris, it's lime juice and simple syrup or sugar) and two parts hard liquor (in this case, rum). Frozen daiquiris add frozen elements (ice and/or frozen fruit) and sometimes an additional fruit or fruit flavor, and then they are pureed in a blender. The frozen banana daiquiri follows this formula and is a perennial favorite summertime tiki drink.
Go Bananas!
Whether a simple banana daiquiri, a frozen daiquiri, or one with exotic flavors from fruits and rums, banana daiquiris are a perennial favorite. So the next time you crave a refreshing, sweet cocktail, give a banana daiquiri a try.
